The porcelain manufacturers of Meissen have always been fascinated by animals. In the last three centuries a variety of species and breeds have been immortalized – sometimes naturalistic, sometimes stylized. All figurines share teir outstanding artistic quality and craftmenship.
On display are porcelain-animals from historical eras, such as baroque or art nouveau, as well as contemporary interpretations.

Event Description:
Beauty is talked about almost everywhere nowadays – on one hand as an enticing promise of a happy life and, on the other, as a pipe dream, whose unattainable nature threatens to become a problem for many people. The exhibition What is BEAUTIFUL? offers a critical examination of where we stand now and how we got here. What do we find beautiful anyway? How do we talk about beauty, or even argue about it? What motives and interests play a part?
In debates about beauty, present-day expectations come up against traditional cultural and sociological topics – not to mention brand-new scientific issues. Although it is generally assumed that the mass media dictate a standardized ideal of beauty, the exhibition reaches quite a different conclusion: that in the daily lives of most people today, beauty means individual difference and colourful diversity.
Visitors to the exhibition discover how beauty comes into existence as a social parameter and as an individual concept; they gain insight into how beauty motivates people to take their lives into their own hands.
The presentation and architecture of this exhibition have been developed by a team of designers from the film industry. Their modern scenario offers a broad public – young people especially – a wealth of inspiration to reflect their own relationship to beauty.
