Description: Typically, all international students go to DIS, Dresden International School. The fees are quite high and are usually paid by the employer of the international worker. The school has a great website with a lot of useful information in German and English versions.

Description: The German education system (1st grade through university) is available free of charge to legally defined "Expatriates". Of course, all courses are taught in German, so fluency in the language is needed. Students who are not proficient in German may attend special courses until they reach a level that will enable them to take part in regular classes.

Description: It is estimated that approximately 300-400 families home school in Germany. There are no laws that specifically allow for home schooling and each family is required to get permission from the local school authority. Generally to receive authority to homeschool you must demonstrate an qualified educational background. Families who are living in Germany on a tourist visa should be able to home school with no problems.

There are currently several German families who are in court trying to protect their right to home school. Some parents have been fined and risk jail. Before you decide to home school consider and be informed of your rights. Families are required to register their children with the local school campus.


Higher Education

There are many resources for English language higher education programs throughout Germany. Most programs center on Business and Marketing but Dresden has a music and engineering program.

Boston University has several international programs in Dresden that include music at the Carl Maria von Weber Hochschule für Musik and the engineering & science program at Technische Universität Dresden. There is also a program for students who plan to enroll directly into a German University. Intensive German language programs are required to begin any of the Boston University programs. All courses in the engineering and science program are taught in English.
