Local TransporationDresden is an easy place to get around. You've got many choices besides a car - trams, buses, trains - and even an airport. Remember that the gas prices posted are in liters - not gallons. Trams & BusesThe tram and bus system are the lifeblood of Dresden, you can get just about anywhere you want on a tram or bus. Pick up a map and buy a monthly pass at the major tram stations: Postplatz, Albertplatz, Pirnaischer Platz and the train stations Neustadt Banholf & Hauptbanholf. Monthly passes are good for all buses, trams, regional buses and the S-bahn which is the train that serves the Dresden area. You can purchase a pass at the train stations and at the main tram information locations that are indicated by an "i" on the tram map. Adult passes are €40 and student passes with I.D. are €30. Tram & Bus Tips:
Maps & Timetables: Tram & Bus Map > pdf : This is the map you can pick up at the information centers at the major stops. It will not print well off your printer. It is best viewed on your monitor by zooming in on a specific section. Trams and buses run every 10 minutes in the day time but schedules change in the off hours. You can find the timetables at the DVB website. The website is in German, but you can choose between three timetable lists.
Local TrainsDeutsche Bahn The S-Bahn and regional trains are an inexpensive way to see nearby cities and can be a fun alternative to driving. Find out about the special offers and discounts before making your reservations or buying your tickets. For €30 up to five adults can take a day trip anywhere in the state you are in. Children under 14 travel free. Travel on the S-Bahn is free with a monthly tram pass and allows you to travel to the airport and the city border. You can buy tickets online, over the phone, at the station reservation desk or at the easy to use Kiosks that have a variety of language options. If you are in a hurry, tickets can be purchased on the train but at a higher fee. All long-distance trains offer some type of food and beverages. Be prepared to pay high prices or bring your own food and drinks. Most trains have tables in some areas and it is fine to bring food on board with you and feed the family. Tables usually have electrical outlets. |
